Position Overview
Texans for Affordable Healthcare (TAHC) is an independent, nonpartisan organization dedicated to advancing policies that make healthcare more affordable, transparent, and accessible for Texas families and employers.
TAHC is seeking a dynamic, mission-driven Executive Director to serve as the organization’s chief executive, lead advocate, and public voice. Specifically, this contract position will lead TAHC’s advocacy, public affairs, coalition-building, and organizational efforts, working with policymakers, employers, healthcare stakeholders, and coalition partners to advance practical policy solutions that improve healthcare affordability and strengthen Texas’ healthcare system.
This role is ideal for a passionate advocate who excels in building relationships and bringing people together around a common purpose. Serving as the voice of the organization, the successful candidate will be an effective communicator capable of translating complex healthcare issues into meaningful policy solutions while advancing TAHC’s mission.
Candidates may come from a variety of backgrounds including advocacy organizations, trade associations, nonprofit leadership, healthcare, public policy, government affairs, communications, grassroots organizing, business organizations, or related fields. Experience working with the Texas Legislature or in government affairs is valuable but not required.
The position offers a flexible schedule, with occasional travel required for legislative meetings, conferences, and stakeholder events.
Key Responsibilities
Advocacy & Public Policy
Serve as TAHC's principal advocate and representative before the Texas Legislature, state agencies, coalition partners, and other stakeholders.
Lead the organization's public policy and advocacy agenda by developing and implementing strategies that advance healthcare affordability, transparency, competition, and consumer access.
Build and maintain productive relationships with legislators, legislative staff, executive agencies, business leaders, healthcare organizations, and community stakeholders.
Prepare policy briefs, testimony, talking points, educational materials, and advocacy resources.
Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and identify opportunities to advance TAHC's mission.
Represent TAHC at legislative hearings, stakeholder meetings, conferences, and public events.
Coalition Building & Stakeholder Engagement
Build and maintain strong relationships with employers, business organizations, healthcare providers, consumer advocates, local organizations, and other stakeholders.
Develop strategic partnerships that expand TAHC's statewide influence.
Organize and lead coalitions around shared policy priorities.
Engage grassroots supporters and community leaders to strengthen advocacy efforts.
Organizational Leadership
Provide strategic leadership for TAHC's advocacy, communications, and organizational priorities.
Develop strategic plans, advocacy objectives, and organizational goals.
Provide regular updates to stakeholders regarding legislative developments, organizational initiatives, opportunities, and challenges.
Support fundraising, organizational growth, and long-term sustainability.
Public Affairs & Communications
Serve as the primary spokesperson and public representative for TAHC.
Develop compelling messages that educate policymakers and the public about healthcare affordability and transparency.
Collaborate on media relations, opinion pieces, digital communications, and public education campaigns.
Oversee digital advocacy efforts, including email communications, social media, online engagement, and grassroots campaigns.
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated leadership experience in advocacy, nonprofit leadership, public policy, healthcare, government affairs, communications, coalition building, community organizing, trade associations, or a related field.
Passion for improving healthcare affordability and expanding access to high-quality healthcare.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to build trust and productive relationships with diverse stakeholders.
Strong strategic thinking, organizational skills, and sound judgment.
Ability to inspire others, build consensus, and advance organizational goals.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Willingness to represent TAHC professionally before policymakers, stakeholders, media, and the public.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with the Texas Legislature, state government, or public policy.
Experience in government affairs, lobbying, legislative advocacy, or political campaigns.
Knowledge of healthcare affordability, insurance markets, prescription drug policy, healthcare transparency, or healthcare delivery systems.
Experience leading coalitions, advocacy campaigns, nonprofit organizations, or statewide initiatives.
Existing relationships with Texas policymakers, business leaders, healthcare organizations, or advocacy groups.
Location
Austin, Texas is preferred, with regular engagement at the Texas Capitol and travel throughout the state as needed.
