Greetings and Happy New Year!

As 2023 kicks off, I want to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Mia Garza McCord and I will be serving as the new executive director of Texans for Affordable Health Care. I have almost 20 years’ experience in the Texas legislature in both policy and campaigns. Most recently, I served as the President of a public policy think tank. Health care policy has been a huge focus of my policy career, and I am excited to continue my work in this arena.

Just as importantly, I’m also a mother to two children, a daughter to their grandparents, and a consumer who has had to navigate the complex web of our health care system on all of our behalf’s. In fact, just last month I was scrambling to find a prescription drug that is on backorder to treat a health condition. I know the importance of having access to affordable, available health care and prescription drugs from personal experience – and that’s exactly what we are fighting for at Texans for Affordable Health Care.

As you know, the 88th Texas Legislative Session begins TODAY and Texans for Affordable Health Care will be monitoring and weighing in on legislative efforts that both positively and negatively affect Texans’ ability to access the health care we need. Some of the issues we will tackle in the next five months at your state capitol include:

  • The mounting cost of unfunded mandates

  • The rising prices of prescription drugs

  • Protections from price gouging, and

  • Supporting employer-sponsored health care.

As we begin this session, we want to hear from you! What challenges do you face in ensuring you and your families stay healthy? Are you having to choose between needed medication and the everyday essentials your family needs? If you are you a small business owner, what is preventing you from offering your employees health insurance or more robust health care coverage? Click here to send me an email and let’s make sure your voices are heard by our elected officials!

Sincerely,
Mia Garza McCord
Executive Director
